As part of efforts to reduce the incidents of card readers inability to capture fingerprints on permanent voters cards (PVCs), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Tuesday advised women in Taraba State not to apply Henna on their fingers until the end of the general election.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Ahmad Makama, who gave the advice during a stakeholders meeting in Jalingo said the advise has become imperative based on the experience garnered during the mock accreditation exercise conducted by the commission.

Makama stated that it was discovered that all the ladies whose fingerprints could not be captured during the mock accreditation exercise applied the native cosmetics which is locally called pale and commonly used by women in the north on their fingers thereby fueling the possibility that the application of the substance was responsible for the inability of the card readers to capture their fingerprints.

According to the him, I want to advise ladies to stop applying pale on their fingers till after the March 28 and April 11 polls are conducted. This will make it easier for the card reader machine to recognise their fingerprints during the accreditation he said.

He, however, revealed that the Commission would provide incident forms to be filed by those whose fingerprints could not be captured to enable them to vote saying the commission envisage that 30 per cent of registered voters may encounter the challenge.

He enjoined electorates in Taraba State to insist that results of polls be declared and pasted at each polling unit stressing that it is a fundamental and compulsory ingredient of the current electoral exercise.

The commissioner further informed the stakeholders comprising the Commissioner of Police, Director of DSS and state Director of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as well as leaders of political parties that the sensitive electoral materials would arrive the state on Wednesday and by the arrival would be witnessed political party leaders, security agents and journalists.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Freeman Tumba, the state Director of the NYSC, urged the stakeholders to desist from harassing the electoral officials who are mostly youth corps members.

Tumba urged politicians to shun politics of bitterness and shun violence to guarantee peaceful, free, fair and acceptable polls noting that whoever loses election today could win another day.
